Paddling the Kynna Waterways

Kynna is a watercourse in Finnskogen, perfect for canoeing and kayaking.

This paddling trip offers ribbon-shaped lakes and narrow rivers winding through idyllic forested country. It’s a close-to-nature experience - especially in the narrow river sections - and you may be fortunate enough to experience birds and animals at unusually close quarters. The overriding silence int he area is also completely magical!

Kynna is a nice, gentle watercourse without any great current. This makes it easy to paddle and ideal for families and beginners. Sites for camping and picnicking have been organised along the river. There are also many good places for swimming.

Kynna was formerly used for the transportation of timber, and the remains of old dam constructions and other cultural and historical evidence provide extra interest.

This is the perfect weekend trip. With around 24 kilometres of navigable water, and entering three different municipalities, it’s possible to plan trips with one or two overnight stays and two or three days’ paddling. That there are various alternative places for starting and finishing your trip means you can decide just how far - or how long - you wish to paddle.

A network of forest roads - also marked as cycle routes - follow the Kynna banks. This makes access for both canoes and crews easy along the entire route. The roads also mean added safety if anything untoward should happen under way.

Kynna also has more to offer than fantastic paddling. There are lots of marked cycle routes, for example, including the round trip of the entire valley. The many campsites along Kynna are also accessible by cycle.

Deeper into Finnskogen, other possibilities come to the fore. Here you can find the fantastic Finnskog Trail www.finnskogleden.com, various lakes for fishing, wartime escape routes and other DNT marked trails.

A great place to stay for all these experiences is Gravberget Gård. www.gravbergetgaard.no
