In the Footsteps of Edvard Munch
A journey back to Edvard Munch's roots.
The journey back to the early life and work of the world-renowned artist starts in Hamar, with a mini-walking tour in the city center and the scenes he painted there.
Edvard Munch was born on the Englaug Østre farm in Løten on December 12, 1863. The Munch family moved to Oslo when Edvard was only ten months old, but the family maintained good contact with their friends at the Englaug farm. Later in life, Munch returned to Løten and Englaug Østre repeatedly. The people and landscape of Løten provided him with inspiration for several of his later works.
The tour then takes us to the Munch Center in Løten. This small center is a museum dedicated to Munch’s time in Løten and the motifs he was inspired by there. The center is located at the Klevfos Industrial Museum in Ådalsbruk. After a coffee break and a short storytelling session at the authentic Klevfos Cellulose & Paper Factory from 1888, we visit the Munch Center for a one-hour orientation about Munch’s time and work in Løten. We then take a short walk to Edvard Munch's Art Workshop, where we can unleash our creativity by making our own graphic prints of some selected Munch motifs.
Next, the journey continues to Munch's birthplace, the Østre Englaug farm. Here, we take a short photo stop below the farm. We proceed to Løten train station for a delicious lunch at the cozy Nærstasjonen Café and General Store. After lunch, we visit Løten Church where little Edvard was baptized for the second time, four months after the emergency baptism at birth. We look at the Svartbækken cemetery and hear the dramatic story that inspired Munch’s painting "The Murderer."
The final stop on the tour is the beautiful Munthegaarden in Elverum. It was here that Edvard Munch's parents met for the first time when Edvard's mother, Laura, was a housekeeper for doctor Christian Munthe, father of Margrethe and Gerhard Munthe. She met doctor Christian Munch, who was substituting for Munthe. Today, the farm is run as an event venue. The hosts tell the story of the famous Munthe siblings and Laura Munch's time at the farm.
The day trip, starting in Oslo or Hamar, can be tailored to the desired number of hours or price for your group. These tours are reserved for small and medium-sized groups and must be booked in advance.
