Lower your shoulders and let yourself be inspired with a trip to Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg
Fredrikstad – here you can walk in the Old Town – experience good food, drink and, not least, art at a high level.
On the Phønixbrygga in Fredrikstad there are three monumental heads of young girls in cast iron whick are made by Jaume Plensa and are called "In my faith, in my hope, in my love". He is one of the world's biggest names among sculptors who work with art in public spaces with footprints in cities such as Chicago, Dubai, London, Liverpool, Nice, Tokyo, Toronto, Vancouver and Fredrikstad.
The next experience on your trip is Edvard Munch's mothers – here you can have a walk around the streets of Fredrikstad city which can be booked all year round – duration 1 hour.
In Storgata in Fredrikstad, a topic was born that was to have a major influence on the painter Edvard Munch. These girls were his mother Laura Cathrine Munch (born Bjølstad) and Karen Bjølstad, his dear aunt Karen. This walk takes you into Edvards Munch's early history in the streets of Fredrikstad.
Then we recommend a lunch at Bastionen 5 in the Old Town, here you will find artists at work, exhibitions and a café with live music weekly, there is room for both charm and atmosphere – so here it goes well with a light lunch at Café Magenta.
When you have had your lunch, you continue around to see the Old Town which was founded in 1567 by King Fredrik II and the town is today considered the best preserved fortified town in the Nordics. What is extra exciting about the Old Town is that it is a living large museum where people visit, live and work – a unique place!
Spend the night in Gamlebyen Hotell and have a better dinner and experience the charm that this beautiful old town gives you!
